Republican Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas’ first congressional district said that in order to effectively fight against the “leftist crime wave,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) should use the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
The RICO Act is a law passed in 1970 that helped law enforcement at the time to financially cripple the Mafia. Today, its scope has evolved in a way that it can be used against other organized criminal syndicates and movements. This means that several people in the Black Lives Matter movement could be charged at once if it can be proved that they were acting in a coordinated manner.
In a letter Gohmert published on Breitbart News, the congressman claimed that while America has never been perfect, as attested to the fact that it allowed slavery to exist for so long, it has improved and continues to improve and has sacrificed more than any other nation to liberate others in the world.
Now, however, Gohmert says that there are organized criminal elements within American society that want to take advantage of a single injustice and use it “to create a new Bolshevik or Marxist revolution. That would lead us into an Orwellian, totalitarian government where God is denied, except the god of a dictatorial government.”
The time has come for the DOJ to prosecute the leaders of this national crime wave under the Racketeer Influenced & Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act for their coordinated efforts to cause destruction & chaos through all violent means at their disposal … https://t.co/gseMoofVcR

Gohmert also took a swipe at “leftist city and state leaders,” who he says are sitting on the sidelines while “radical Marxist mobs” are rioting, burning down cities and vandalizing and toppling America’s historical monuments and statues.
And while innocent people are dying, minority and marginalized communities are being destroyed and American history is being rewritten, the “enemies of self-government and friends of anarchy,” with the help of well-organized and well-funded violent groups, are using the chaos to increase their own power. Given all of this, Gohmert believes that the DOJ needs to use all weapons in its disposal to halt the wave of criminality sweeping across the country, one of those weapons being the RICO Act, because he believes that the destruction and chaos is all being coordinated. He believes the organized criminal groups can be brought to justice on charges of vandalism, looting, assault, arson and possibly even murder.
“Our nation and our competent leaders must fulfill their primary duty to protect this nation and to ensure that swift justice is served upon all who seek to destroy these United States from within.”

Other Republican congressmen in the House of Representatives are also in favor of targeting the BLM movement. Republican members of the House Freedom Caucus held an event on June 25 denouncing the domestic terrorist movement for wanting to “burn down” the country if it doesn’t adhere to every single one of their demands.

Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona’s fifth district, chair of the House Freedom Caucus, echoing Gohmert, said that federal prosecutors need to start going after the BLM movement with RICO and other racketeering laws that can apply to many individuals at once.
Rep. Chip Roy of Texas’ 21st district said that, because BLM and Antifa are organizing criminal activity across the country, they can be prosecuted as an organized criminal organization. “We have laws on the books that prohibit organized crime.”
It’s time for @realDonaldTrump to press @TheJusticeDept to enforce all applicable federal laws to protect federal property, and to root out organized crime. Congress should defund states that are criminal sanctuaries & endanger the lives of citizens. #StandUpForAmerica https://t.co/dOBvWntAgo

The opponents of these Republican congressmen are predictably unhappy. Hank Gilbert, a Democrat set to run against Gohmert in November, responded to his letter on social media by saying that he is shocked to see that the congressman would want to use a law that targets organized crime against “people-driven protests.”
